A quiet night
This was supposed to be a quiet night. I had rented earlier two DVDs; Π and Judgment at Nyremberg. I told my father I was going to see the later, so that he could join me if he wanted. He said he'd come if there wasn't a problem with the DVD again. By that he meant if there wasn't a problem with the subtitles, not that there was anything wrong with them the last time. They were tiny as always. I haven't had a problem with my DVD player for months. Sure there are some DVDs from a particular company that my player refuses to recognize, but I avoid them and . Well tonight there was a problem.
A week ago, I watched Z using Real Time player. I've never used Power DVD, there was a bug in the installed version that came with my pc and though a friend offered to give me his version, I refused. Why bother when there are other ways to do your job? Yup, that's what I said. Sometimes I get so lazy, I'm looking for the easy way out. Anyway, that's how I started using Media player. Well last week there was a problem with it, a library missing, so I switched to Real Time. I've read that Media was one of the programs that were affected by the installation of SP2, but I hadn't watched a movie for a long time and I couldn't be sure that was the problem. Again I didn't think much about it.
Fast forward to an hour ago. I'm inserting the disk and choosing Real Time. Bang! You have to download a plugin to play this disk. I didn't need a plugin last week, why do I need it now? I check and see that the plugin is only a couple Kbytes. Well, at least it's something my dial-up can download. I download it and a new warning comes up. We're very sorry but we couldn't detect the proper device driver. I don't have a driver? You've got to be kidding. I make a mental check to see if anything weird happened last week. Hmm... my antivirus found a virus. Looking at my options I think it's easier to try and fix the Media player. So I get online again only to find out that I have to re-install it. I don't have it in CD. And it's only 12 MB.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to download Media from the university, but I'll be coming home with a couple of CDs, because if there's still a problem with Media I'll have to format. Heads may fall, antivirus may be uninstalled, but I'm watching the movies before the 28th when I have to return them.
