Of butchered movies
A post dedicated to all the movies that have suffered in the hands of the Greek TV, distribution companies and translators.
To LOTR, because, Mr/Ms translator, there is a big difference between Gondor and Mordor and scout is most definitely not a boy scout. Unless you know something about Middle Earth that us, mere mortals, are not aware of.
To Valmont, because crime shouldn't be translated as pity (κρίμα) due to their phonetic similarity.
To Highlander IV: Endgame. What a better way of crashing a girl's crush by mis-translating the hero's name. It's Methos, not Pethos!
To Lawrence of Arabia, because, as a friend swears, the last scene is usually cut. The film lasts 3 hours with the commercials, what more could you want?
To The Last of the Mohicans, because the dramatic scene where Alice and Uncas die is always interrupted by commercials.
Finally to the old, black and white Greek films which have been enhanced with modern scenes, colourful scenes.

I would like to add my own rant. I protest against...
- dubbed films, TV series and documentaries
- invented subtitles that make absolutely no sense! Like the title for BJD in German: "Schokolade zum Frühstück" (chocolate as/for breakfast)
- the horrible soundtracks that are added to silent movies
- colouring of films that were originally shot in black/white
- the most horrible film remakes ever, they make me cringe!
- cheap copies of successful films
- about every film about Vietnam and WWII
- all those horrible German TV shows about doctors and hospitals! No, they will never compare to the quality of their US predecessors
- the horrible, horrible, TV stations that I pay high fees for, which pay me back with folk music and crooner shows on a Saturday night!
*grrrrraaaaaarrrrrhhh*

Dubbed films! Oh, horrors! You can find some second rate films in TV dubbed, but generally we use subtitles.
We also have problem with the translation of the titles (if you check the comments of the Christmas list you will see how sometimes we confuse the original and the translated title), but I can't think of a good example right now. TEOR was translated The Next Page, which has nothing to do with the original meaning, but at least it was diary related.
Best one ever from an american b-movie:
Actor: "I'll make a deposit of the money"
Translator:"Θα βάλω τα λεφτά στο ντεπόζιτο"

This one has been since forever one of the things I hated, I loathed, I despised and raged about unceasantly. If anyone asked me what part of the movie I liked the most, there is NO DOUBT it would be this scene. Yet, it's the one they *always* interrupt for commercials.
I've stopped watching movies on a TV screen since, but thumbs up for bringing this up!

Back to The Last of the Mohicans, as far as I am concerned there isn't a point where the film can be interrupted, with the exception of the first 15 minutes. The whole film is 3 or 4 large scenes and personally I can't really say where the Scene begins. Is it when the sisters are captured or is it when Cora is released?
It's good for you that you've stopped watching films on tv. I don't think I'll ever be able to do that; it's that silly anticipation of waiting to see which films will be on next week.
